Edu Tech Platforms: A Total Disruption of Education.

Don’t you all think that the education sector need some disruption? Edu Tech Platforms lately have been innovating into a more immersive experience.

I have met countless entrepreneurs and individuals with whom I have discussed ways in which we can rehaul the education system through Edu Tech Platforms.

What we teach? 

Excess of content has made it irrelevent. It makes absoloutley no sense to teach same thing over and over to students which they can get quickly via Google. Shouldn’t we focus on skills that machines can do better and faster?

How we teach?

It’s unfruitful to try to introduce a topic to student through a lecture, no matter how interesting the topic is it’s always subjected to the attention you had previously. Sure, we can try to forcefully ask them to engage. But does that achieve anything significant?

When we teach?

Scheduled Class regularly? Internet offers so many more opportunities to interact with students. Can’t we at least experiment with different formats of Digital Education Platforms?

And, talking about examinations, Encouraging students to memorize facts overnight, just to pass a test seems insignificant and old-school.

Education sector badly needed a creative disruption.

No one took initiative a few months back. Any initiatives taken were slow and hard-fought.

And now, the tables have turned for good.

Rise of Edu Tech Platforms

For the last 2 months, even though many Tier-1 educational institutions have met the lockdown requirements for their students by putting their courses online, we should wonder wether this version of fully online— distance learning —program could be enough to attract students to enroll this fall?

Why would people invest into some online course?

According to Statista, More than 40% of people in the USA still consider conventional classes as more effective than online courses.

Most people believe that the value of education is in human contact and experience. Student-to-student and student-to-teacher.

This is partially true.

The Classrooms are Sacred.

Digital tools sure allow us to make teaching much more intuitive and interesting, but the live in-class experience remains unmatched by it. Teaching so much more fun for both the students and the teacher if there are interactions, discussions, and questions. Not to discount the “a-ha” moments.

So, when teachers were asked to record their classes, there was considerable reluctance to do it. From dilution of teaching experience to the unfamiliarity of teachers with the new tech, the reasons were a lot and so were the opportunities.

Again. Things change quickly.

Nobody could have predicted this time last year that entire curriculums, all the courses, would move online in 2020. Teaching guidelines will be updated within weeks (which used to take years). And, when the crisis will be over, we will not go back to the lecture room immediately — or  if we will ever go back to being conventional teacher-pupil at all.

It turns out that the online experience is much better than expected. It offers more flexibility and freedom. It’s time-saving and is mostly flawless. Videos and online lectures get the job done perfectly for students. The existing online tools are efficient in providing (as a teacher) and consuming (as a student) the educative content.

Certain things of academics are even better online. The “break-out” sessions, The ability to chat and ask questions. Also, the repetition of difficult lectures is a huge benefit in a world of busy schedules.

Edu-Tech Platforms in Post-Corona World.

The Educational Institutions will innovate to stay ahead in the game. They will not only offer “conventional” online classes. They will reinvent every aspect of it. Here are some instant ideas on the kind of debates we will be having in Near Future.

Interactive games-based E-Learning. Online lectures will be aided by videos, Q&A sessions, quizzes, and games. This isn’t new, but similar to online classes and we will see a mainstream breakthrough in this field.

Teaching aided by Augmented Reality. The near future will be about social bubbles of fixed small groups of students in restricted class sizes. In such a new environment, AR and VR will become mainstream in teaching. Think of VR field trips, virtual group meetings, and virtual group learning experience. Teachers and students will meet and interact in an online environment using digital avatars.

This is the future. We will spend a significant portion of our time in these new virtual places. Much like Ready Player One.

In Steven Spielberg’s 2018 movie, The virtual reality becomes a go-to escape for the people of the dystopian real world. In a post-COVID education, VR won’t replace the real world. It will complement the real-world and opens doors to unprecedented and unexplored opportunities, making education immersive and accelerated learning experience.

Live-Interactive Sessions. Face-to-face and social interaction will then have more relevance. Programs will offer live-interactive sessions and lab programs where students will meet, collaborate, discuss, and apply what they have learned on online assignments in practice.

Using such strategies, institutions could provide a digital educational experience that is more attuned to the young generation. It is also more relevant to the digital world.

This new educational experience will be built around a compact, more intense bursts of information that’ll put a premium on collaboration and creative problem-solving skills.

This could be a hard pill to swallow for some, but education institutions had to learn from the success of social media and gaming companies and not simply dismiss them as childish or one-hit fluke. We all now live in a world where variable rewards drive our interest into things like social media “likes” and “shares” that pull us into constantly check on how our posts are being received. Or, the gaming concept of “power upgrades” — the small prizes or achievements that games offer upon completion of a campaign and which gaming companies use to catch the attention of their customers and keep them playing engaged in their product.

Education could be on another level by adopting these trends. In the “post-COVID” world, the classroom will become a manifestation of this new world.

After all, what could be more better place for students and teachers to engage, experiment, and co-learn then the real world itself ?
